Meet Tommy Atkins

Meet Tommy Atkins

Presented by Beyond Eternity Promotions Ltd
‘Meet Tommy Atkins’ takes the audience not just through Tommy’s war, but also his life back home in Britain post war. We learn of his experiences in the trenches – fighting on the Somme, at Passchendaele and Loos; and also of the boredom, the loss and indeed the comradeship. Returning to Britain, Tommy shows us how a generation of returning men were maltreated but how ultimately it was his generation that forced through the foundations of the Welfare State.
From the beginning of the Great War to the end of the Second, Private Tommy Atkins was there.
This is his story.

Educating Rita

21st Jul to 23rd Jul

7.30pm (matinee 2pm Sat)

Educating Rita

Educating Rita by Willy Russell is a witty yet poignant look at a working-class woman’s attempts to change her social circumstances
Frank is a tutor of English in his fifties whose disillusioned outlook on life drives him to seek refuge in bottles of whisky he hides on his bookshelves. Rita is a forthright, twenty-six-year-old hairdresser who is hungry to “know everything”. With Frank as her tutor, Rita embarks on an Open University course and her education process begins. The effects are both highly amusing and serious as her fresh, intuitive approach becomes clouded and stifled as she grapples with the problem of a formal education geared to the passing of exams.

Educating Rita was originally written for the Royal Shakespeare Company and produced in 1980. Willy Russell requested to update the published text, in the light of productions in Liverpool in 2002, but we have decided to produce with the original script, setting it firmly in the ‘80s because we feel that Rita herself is a product of the 80s and her personal quest is to reach beyond it. Therefore, the language, societal mores and attitudes reflect that period.

The role of Rita in this production is played by Charlotte Stringer who is well-known to local audiences – and well-loved for her performance of that other hairdresser, southern belle Truvy in our production of Steel Magnolias. Marc Cox is a talented actor who has been seen more recently as a director of many of our productions; the chemistry between his Frank and Charlotte’s Rita makes this a particularly brilliant pairing which was palpable even at the auditions.

Educating Rita is ALPs second production after Lockdown, after the delightful version of Jeeves & Wooster which took place last November. We are now gearing up to our final production this year, The Vicar of Dibley Christmas which we know will be a rousing success too.

Tickets will be on sale for Dibley soon, and when you buy a souvenir programme for Educating Rita you might be buying the one with a secret number that wins you two free Dibley tickets plus two glasses of wine during its interval!

Dates:
Thursday 21 July – 7.30pm
Friday 22 July – 7.30pm
Saturday 23 July – 2.00pm matinee
Saturday 23July – 7.30pm

My Mountain Life

An Illustrated talk with still images & video clips

On the remote Siula Grande in Peru in June 1985, mountaineer Simon Yates found himself in a desperately unenviable position. He was slowly being pulled off the mountain face by his injured partner, Joe Simpson, dangling on the rope 50 metres below. His action in cutting the rope saved both their lives in the epic of survival that followed and with the publication of the book ‘Touching The Void’, film and stage play both climbers became household names.

It was an experience that could have put many off the sport of mountaineering – but not Simon. Over 35 years later, he is still a very active exploratory climber and guide, making several expeditions to the mountains each year. From the Arctic to the Antarctic, Alaska to Central Asia there is hardly a significant range that he has not visited.

Come along and witness Simon’s tireless journey from that mountain in Peru to some of the remotest on the planet and share with him the drama, excitement and beauty of modern, lightweight alpinism. Told with wit, dry humour and lavishly illustrated with images and video collected on his great climbs.

Simon is a totally engaging speaker, who both entertains and inspires.”

The Unravelling Wilburys

The perfect mix of superb musicianship and comedy! The Unravelling Wilburys play the songs of 1980s supergroup ‘The Traveling Wilburys’ and also dip into the back catalogue of each of its’ members; George Harrison, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne, all the while presenting their own unique slant on what it means to be a tribute band with music for everyone.

This top tribute show is more than just a tribute – they are the complete package! Their great combination of brilliant musicianship and tongue in cheek humour has had rave reviews throughout the UK. Playing the country-rock songs of the Traveling Wilburys, the band also steal some choice numbers from its five iconic members; Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, George Harrison, Bob Dylan and Jeff Lynne.

The fabulous Unravelling Wilburys are made up of Sticky Willy, Walter, Thumper, Blind Melon and Honky Tonk Wilbury, the “real” Wilbury brothers, who grew up in an Appalachian shack and first presented their songs in Nashville back in 1987. The show tells the story of how their songs were (allegedly) stolen by Messrs Orbison & Co. at Nashville’s Tootsies Bar and the hard road they had to tread to get ‘em back.

With a set list comprising of songs including ‘Handle With Care’, ‘Tweeter And The Monkey Man’, ‘The Devil’s Been Busy’, ‘Pretty Woman’, ‘Here Comes The Sun’, ‘Mr Blue Sky’, ‘Mr Tambourine Man’
and ‘American Girl’, this is a show not to be missed!

Priscilla Queen of the Desert!

The Athenaeum Masqueraders present Priscilla Queen of the Desert!

From the 2018 NODA SW District Achievement Award and Best Musical nominated group, who brought hit shows like 9 to 5, Legally Blonde and The Full Monty, The Athenaeum Masqueraders are bringing the drag queens to Warminster for the feel-good extravaganza Priscilla Queen of the Desert in October 2022.

ABOUT THE SHOW:

Based on the popular 1994 film, we follow the story of two drag queens and a transsexual who buy a run-down bus (they call it Priscilla) and set out on a road trip across the Australian Outback to perform a drag show at a faraway resort run by one of the drag queens, Tick’s ex-wife. However, Tick is hesitant to tell his friends, Bernadette (a former performing icon whose best days are behind her) and Adam (a rambunctious young troublemaker), his own personal reasons for taking the trip. Along their trip, they encounter an array of Australians, some who aren’t as accepting of their lifestyle while strengthening their own friendship.

This heart-warming, uplifting adventure where all involved find far more than they ever hoped for, is set to a parade of dancefloor favourites including “It’s Raining Men”, “I Will Survive”, “Hot Stuff,” “Boogie Wonderland,” “Go West,” “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” and “I Love The Nightlife”.

This wildly fresh and funny musical is a journey to the heart of FABULOUS!
